Athlete Profile - Jennifer Dechico - 2010 State Summer Games
Determination and devotion are two words that describe Jennifer Dechico, 38 years old. She was unable to participate in this year’s Special Olympics because just two weeks before coming to Utica, NY to compete in the basketball competition, she broke her wrist in three places and has to have surgery. Because she is devoted to her team, she still made a trip out to the Special Olympics to support her team, her family.
“This group is a close knit family,” Coach Marge Timmons. “They all look out for each other.”
When asked how the team is playing, Dechico said, “They are playing good, they are playing for me. I am very very appreciative. They have been great since I got hurt.”
Dechico had to overcome many personal issues but because of the Special Olympics, she has met new friends and is able to help people. She is currently taking online courses to become a nurse.
Dechico also plays floor hockey and track and field for Special Olympics.
